We bought Holly Howe Cottage for our own holidays and chose it for its convenience and for its lovely views. We have carefully restored, furnished and equipped it to provide a holiday home which is not only a good base to go out from, but also a comfortable place to return to whatever the weather and at any season of the year. Holly Howe is a mid-Victorian terraced house built in the traditional local style with an added modern kitchen. It is situated in a private cul-de-sac overlooking Ambleside and literally 3 minutes walk from the centre of the town (allow an extra 2 minutes for the walk back!). From the front of the house the views are to Loughrigg round to the Fairfield Horseshoe, and on a clear day it is possible to pick out The Old Man of Coniston, Wetherlam, Pavey Ark and Sergeant Man. There is parking for one car at the front of the house.

On the ground floor the front door leads straight into the sitting room, cosy with comfortable chairs and sofa, TV, video and DVD recorder/player. There is a living flame gas fire (a gasfired 'open coal hearth'). Behind is the dining room with fitted china cabinet, pine table and chairs and a gas-burning Jotul 'coal' stove. The separate kitchen is fitted and well equipped. There is a gas cooker, a small mircrowave, fridge, dishwasher, electric kettle and toaster.

On the first floor the bedroom at the front has a king-size bed. Also on this floor there is a large walk-in airing cupboard with hanging space (not provided in the bedrooms) and extra shelf space. Next door is the spacious bathroom with washbasin and bath with a Mira shower over. The w.c. is in the bathroom. Apart from the cellar, bathroom and kitchen, the cottage has fitted carpets in all rooms and gas central heating throughout the house (even in the cellar). The house has proved warm even in sub-zero temperatures. The water is heated by gas on a demand system.

On the second floor the front bedroom has twin beds. The back bedroom has a double bed. This room (apart from the kitchen) has the only window which is not the original sash window. Instead there is a double-glazed picture window looking out to the summit of Wansfell Pike.

The cellar The cottage also has a cellar where you will find a freezer, washing machine, tumble-dryer and the original stone sink where you can wash your muddy boots. There is plenty of space to hang wet outdoor clothing.

The garden at the back of the house is mostly grass with a terraced area and a summer house from which you can enjoy views of the Fairfield Horseshoe.
